Henry Holiday, There Was War in Heaven: Truth, Love, St Michael, Faith, Hope, 1917–18
This is a highly finished preparatory drawing for a stained-glass window for Saint John the Baptist Church in Yeovil, Somerset, England. The central panel features Saint Michael ready to kill the dragon, surrounded by figures symbolising truth, love, faith and hope. These virtuous figures contrast with those who inhabit the underworld, featured in the lower sections of the panels. Acquired by Walter Murdoch in 1927, this was the first work of art to be purchased by the University.
