Celestian and the tranquil Memorial Garden in which it sits were funded by a generous donation from the Tahija family. The enigmatic sculpture is deeply human yet playfully metallic – part machine, part meditation and completely out of this world. Within its plinth, artist-in-residence Hans Arkeveld suspended a crucifix and other items accumulated over the years from those who bequeathed their mortal remains to the School of Anatomy and Human Biology for training and research. The sculpture and garden honour these people.
