Ian Fairweather, Tethered Horses outside Gate, Peking, 1936
This painting is a swirling mass of colour in which figures and details can be glimpsed but seem at risk of getting lost among Fairweather's characteristic gestural, calligraphic line and the complex, heavily worked surface. The scene is alive, however, and the area outside the gate is congested, full of people and detail.
