The various marbles used on the floor of the Winthrop Hall foyer were sourced from Europe as Australian marbles were thought too soft for flooring and pavements. At the time complaints were lodged by the local Operative Stonemasons' Union about the use of Italian stonemasons (the De Marco Brothers) from Melbourne to lay the floor. Not only were the artisans non-British but 1930–31 was a time of Depression when work was scarce.
