Oxford University mathematician Professor Sir Roger Penrose developed five-fold symmetry employing two tiles in the form of fat and thin rhombuses. Most Arab, Moroccan and Persian tile patterns are based on repetitive two, four or six symmetry. The five-fold symmetry appealed to the chemists occupying the Molecular and Chemical Sciences Building. The tiled flooring of the atrium extends for 900 square metres.
