There is no bookshop or library that conveys the enthusiasm for books and reading that is so evident at the Save the Children booksale in the Winthrop Hall Undercroft. Every August, the University branch of the charity holds a giant sale of books that have been donated over the previous 12 months. Up to 100,000 books, CDs and sheet music are sorted and displayed for eager readers. The keenest queue outside Winthrop Hall some hours before the sale opens on a Friday night, often in cold wind or rain. After five days, disadvantaged children in Australia and across the world are a lot better off, as Perth bibliophiles restock their bookshelves and settle down to indulge in that particular pleasure that is reading. The University Branch of Save the Children held their forty-third book sale in 2010.
