Polus Antarcticus
Polus Antarcticus
Jan Jansson, Polus Antarcticus, c.1650
With an unusual orientation on the South Pole and some attractive vignettes of native peoples, this is probably the best map of Dutch exploration of Australia prior to Tasman's 1642–43 voyage. This engraved map, with original hand-colouring, shows the western and southern coasts, including the Land of the Leeuwin and the Land of the Eendracht.

Engraved map with original hand-colouring, 49 x 43 cm
