Coat of Arms
Coat of Arms
University Coat of Arms
The design of the University Coat of Arms evolved over a six-decade period with this design, by Lieutenant Colonel Walker, registered in 1972 with the College of Arms in London. The evolution saw the colours vary, the swan change shape, the wavy lines on the books turn into words and the addition of the fish (hake). The hake, a symbol from the Hackett family coat of arms, was a deliberate choice by Senate to recognise University benefactor Sir John Winthrop Hackett.
